APPEAL TO HELP TSUNAMI VICTIMS OF SRI LANKA

SUNFO (Sri Lanka-United Nations Friendship Organisation) is a non-political, non-sectarian and non-religious people's organization working towards peace, harmony and well-being of mankind according to the principles of United Nations under the patronage of the Honorable Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka with the blessings of United Nations.

As the nation took a temporary breather from 26th December Sunday's cataclysmic disaster, a clear picture of the extent and enormity of the catastrophe began to gradually emerge as the country went into mourning for the unprecedented number of victims, dead and displaced in the worst natural disaster to hit Sri Lanka in living memory. According to the statistics available so far, 30,000 people were killed and 800,000 affected in Sri Lanka by the Tsunami 9.0/2004 tidal waves which also struck a wave of destruction from the west of the Indonesian Island of Sumatra, passing  North towards Madras and then to the Maldives.

The highways and Railway Tracks in the costal area in Sri Lanka were badly damaged making it difficult for rescue operations and relief work to be carried out. However, volunteers of SUNFO and many humanitarian organizations, military and governmental officials are working round the clock to help all the affected people. Whole world came forward to help us.

A Disaster Management Unit has been established at the SUNFO Head Quarters, Colombo to expedite relief operations and assist victims of tidal waves.
